Building An Extension : Types Of Materials Needed

Every once in awhile, it is nice to change up the looks of your home. A modification to the house can be something as simple as moving the furniture around or placing a new coat of paint on the walls. For the truly metamorphosing action, however, you can opt to add an extension onto your home. The additional structure may be an extra bedroom for a new family member or a game room to house a lovely pool table. Just as when putting up the original house, there are certain types of building materials needed to build an extension.

When building the frame for the extension, wood will be used. Pieces of lumber are readily available at many home improvement stores as well at lumber yards. Whichever you choose will depend on your budget and what is in stock. From this wood, rafters, wall studs, and joists will be built. These pieces are certainly not going to hold themselves up, and that is where fasteners play their role. Wood screws and nails are found in almost any project involving wood, and they are driven into place using claw hammers, screwdrivers, drills, and ratchet sets. Drill bits are also a good thing to have in case you need to create pilot holes.

The extension will need a foundation and a sub floor, and concrete will be needed to form these structures. Water, cement, and stone are the ingredients in concrete, and an occasional cinder block will make an appearance for additional support. Shovels are also nice tools to keep close at hand in case a little additional concrete distribution is needed or a small piece of land must be dug away. Clean the shovel off right away, especially when working with concrete.

Drywall will need to be purchased in order to create the walls, and an outer material must be chosen. Surely, you will want it to match as closely as possible the rest of the house, so siding, wood, or brick will be needed. Roofing materials are necessary also. These consist of shingles and roofing paper, usually that of the tar variety rather than felt. You will also need gutters and downspouts to direct water away from the extension.

Building an extension onto a house is not all that different than building an actual house. The materials involved are quite similar as well. If you obtain the same materials and perform nearly the same work, building an extension is really not that different than the house.
