Making the Decor at Home More Relaxing
A home is supposed to be a place to relax, a refuge from the outside world. Yet all too often people don’t feel comfortable in their own homes-why is this? Perhaps it’s the décor. Although we try to create homes that look as beautiful and stylish as possible, sometimes the result ends up looking way too contrived. So if the furnishings and accents in your home are only there for looks, consider that it may be time for a change.
Home Is About Making YOU Feel Good
Of course, you want your home to look attractive to others, but you need to ask yourself, at what price? If you can’t even stretch out and enjoy your surroundings, then you need to make some changes. After all, this is your home, and you should feel at home in it. Home is meant to be a place where families can relax, talk about the day’s activities, and enjoy life. When at home, you should feel totally at ease and happy with your surroundings.
You don’t have to necessarily use a certain style to decorate your home. You don’t have to be so particular about your décor that in a country-style home, you can’t place items that don’t necessarily fit that style. Actually, by placing quirky items here and there, you can create a home that’s individual and unique.
So don’t forget to include all those photos, tapestries, and other accents that are special to you. Sometimes rooms that are too refined look uncomfortable, Thus, eclectic décor is a great look. The goal is not to create a room where everything is perfect, as if nothing has ever been touched. Rather, you want the room to look lived in, to feel warm and inviting.
What About Color?
Remember that when it comes to décor and style, color plays a huge role. Everything you include in a décor is going to have color, where it’s a bold dramatic color like royal, red, or gold, or classic tan and beige. Color has a real effect on your mood, whether it’s a soft pastel, a botanical, or another color. Many people don’t realize just what an impact color can have. For instance, a bright, citrusy color will be refreshing and will lift your mood, whereas beige and tan hues are relaxing. Dramatic colors will add elegance and style to any atmosphere.
Don’t be too hasty in deciding what colors to use in a room. Spend some time contemplating what effect different colors can have on you. How does a certain color make you feel? Which ones are your favorites?
Splash some of your favorite colors around the room, on furnishings, walls, and accents. Or choose several shades of the same color to add some depth. Save the deeper shades for doors, baseboards, and chair rails, and paint the walls a lighter shade. A simple change of color can really make a room come alive.
When it comes to your home, your best bet is to forget any “rules.” At the end of the day, you want to end up with a comfortable, relaxing space that you look forward to coming home to. What you want is to design a home that is uniquely your own. It doesn’t make sense to choose a style or design simply because it mimics what your friends have.
So, create a style of your own, one that speaks to your own originality. Not only will others be impressed with your creative genius, but you’ll create a place you can feel at home in. After all, “home sweet home” is having a home that’s just the way you like it.
