Concrete

Structural concrete reduces its own carbon footprint throughout it’s lifetime by absorbing CO2 and that is what makes it unique. It thus achieves environmental sustainability. Reconstructing concrete constructions is almost not needed, since they’re known for his or her durability. Components in concrete are readily available: water, and mixture – composed of sand and gravel or crushed stone.

Concrete buildings are fire-resistant. Concrete doesn’t burn, and thus offers a fireplace wall that protects and stops a hearth from spreading. The flames and warmth of a hearth do not have an effect on concrete, and the water utilized in preventing a fire causes no injury to structural concrete. Smoke or toxic gases don’t come out concrete if it is on fire and it acts as an effective fire shield. Fireplace safety is a primary consideration in the usage of concrete in building constructions across the world.

A wide variety of concrete exists, every a combination of aggregates and water. The process of hydration bonds the water and cement materials together. A a lot stronger concrete outcomes when water is used less in the paste mix. A better hunch with extra free-movement outcomes if water is added to the concrete mixture. Impurities in water can grow to be a difficulty when concrete begins to set and thus the water high quality within the mix is important. Particular person combination particles bond and glue themselves together whereas the concrete sets thus forming a stable mass. Structural concrete gains energy over life, turning into extra durable with time. So constructions made with concrete might be anticipated to give long service.

An vitality-environment friendly material is what concrete is. As air does not leak from walls teacher created resources coupon code made of concrete, this thermal mass property ends in fewer temperature fluctuations in buildings. The costs for heating or cooling the building thus get minimized.

Proper curing of structural concrete is needed to enable it to succeed in its splendid strength. Full energy of the concrete doesn’t get acquired instantly because it sets initially and hardens subsequently. In nearly three weeks, ninety% of the final power is achieved. A concrete stored damp suring the primary three days helps the curing course of quite a lot. Controlling the temperature and humidity, while the initial concrete curing takes place, enhances the final word energy and sturdiness of it. The wind evaporation of moisture, which is usually a critical risk to the end result, may be offset by spraying or ponding the structural concrete floor while it cures. Power loss and incidents of scaling and cracking can result if the surface dries prematurely.

Aggregates are what majorly makes the mixture and concrete is a true composite materials in that sense. As sand, crushed stone or gravel and being fantastic or coarse, these aggregates can be anything actually. An combination combination will be composed of a number of recycled materials as properly today. Crushed to appropriate consistency and added to blended mixture, construction and excavation material can be utilized as required. If not totally, recycled materials is used to partially make recycled material. Structural concrete is a true green success story.

Concrete is actually the most widely used construction materials worldwide. It is a major element in building due to its performance qualities: durability, energy, hearth resistance. Structural concrete is nearly always bolstered with metal placed in specific position to accommodate structural stress, adding further strength and stability to the structure.

Concrete will be forged and molded into totally different textures, coloured to different tints, and used decoratively, so beauty and design may be added enhancements to the wonderful strength and flexibility of structural concrete.

For the homeowner, preparing and pouring concrete projects is often a tricky process. For novices it is generally encouraged to start with smaller sized ventures and to lay them in colder weather conditions if at all possible. Not being experienced with how long it will take for the pour to convert from a flowing blend to a hard ingredient has the potential to put an end to even the best plans. A little job on a good day with expert instruction is without a doubt the most suitable avenue for you to learn the techniques.

The crucial aspect in how long concrete holds up certainly is the level of quality of the construction. Even sound concrete can start to fall apart after many years if poor products are utilized and outstanding building procedures may be dismissed. Proper preparation of the work site is really important to produce  lasting decorative concrete ideas . Concrete projects located on not thoughtfully set up ground will cause a surface which is sloping and is more likely to bust and fall to pieces.

For home owners  with a small assignment, a transportable concrete mixer gives you a good reasonable solution for diy concrete jobs. These can normally be rented from equipment rental retailers and various other sellers. In addition, before buying any concrete, usually there are some concerns to take into account.

The earth of the actual project will have to be properly-drained . It’s also a good idea to moisten the dirt and gravel right before you add some concrete. Moistureless earth may draw the moisture out from the concrete and into your dirt. This could cause the pour to become dry too fast.

Add expansion materials next to old concrete sidewalks, courtyards, entryways, and other permanent types of surface. This is able to permit the concrete to expand and shrink because of hot and cold temperature extremes all year long.

The installation of reinforcing metal or re-bar will be able to strengthen the concrete a great deal. The steel reinforcement rods have to be set center inside the wet concrete and not laid upon the area. You need to put the gridwork of rebar on rocks or different durable substance that permits the concrete to move under  the steel when you pour.

Don’t sprinkle water to the cement once it is delivered to the work site. This added in water weakens the product since the bare cement particles start getting watered down into the combination. Never sprinkle water  as you work with this stuff.

And don’t forget the decor capability of concrete. Stamped decorative concrete design shows the best range of flexibility regarding decorative concrete patterns. Decorative overlays are normally used on an existing concrete area when a stamped concrete work surface is usually crafted right from the ground upward. Each of those types of ornamental concrete looks have the identical high strength and also lasting durability to help make any project last.

Homeowners typically try to decide if they ought to replace their driveway with asphalt or concrete. It is just not constantly an easy decision; particularly when you consider the fee that is involved in such a huge renovation project.

Concrete Driveway:

Pros:

  • Appearance; concrete just looks better. It would be the regular for even one on the most high-priced homes.
  • No annual maintenance; Once initially sealed, cement doesn’t call for any annual maintenance
  • Lasts a lot longer; Concrete need to last 20 years or additional if set up correctly.
  • Concrete may be stained/stamped to search like brick, slate, or stone for a rich look
  • Concrete is versatile in how it’s placed and designed. Curves, color, finish, and textures add versatility to the appearance of concrete.
  • Concrete adds value for your home. Persons just associate cement with getting the best income can buy.
  • It’s concrete! I’m a mason and I’m biased!

If thought adequately through, home owners may possibly side with gravel driveways due to the range of positive aspects they’ve over asphalt and concrete. Laying a driveway with gravel is typically a less expensive endeavor than paying for asphalt and could be carried out by the homeowner cutting out contractors.

Cons:

  • Concrete is far more expensive: The original price of setting up a concrete driveway is slightly more than the price of installing an asphalt driveway. Initially that is.
  • Prone to cracking: This is a huge one. Concrete cracks. It’s what cement does. It is rigid and when pressure from the ground below exerts its effective forces against the concrete, the concrete cracks. However, how bad it cracks and exactly where is typically up to the mason that installed it. With right base preparation and correct expansion cutting, cracks should be hidden and kept to a minimum.
  • Concrete is susceptible to road de-icer which could ruin surface finishes. It is true that inside northern climates in which roads are treated with salt or other road de-icer, the finish in your concrete could be damaged by road de-icer IF it is not properly sealed using a premium penetrating sealer.

To begin, the initial way that gravel beats out other kinds of driveways would be the fact that they are a lot more durable and easier to maintain. Gravel will in no way have this issue because stone driveways merely must be re-spread when they turn out to be agitated from cars and private traffic.

Asphalt Driveway:

Pros:

  • Cheaper initial cost. If you need paving material in your driveway and you don’t have the funds for concrete, asphalt might be an outstanding alternative. It is surely much better than dirt, mud or stone.

But when corners are cut during the pour, it is only later, after the contractor and the workers are long gone, that the homeowner begins feeling the pain: cracks in the basement floors and walls, as well as patios and sidewalks.

Walkway surfaces start flaking and chipping away, leaving craters everywhere. Maybe they’re merely unsightly, but soon people are tripping over them and commenting on how unsightly the property is.

How about solid yet flexible concrete fences?

But wouldn’t a concrete fence make a home unsightly? Contrary to popular belief, concrete can be molded into almost any shape and size, and embellished with myriad designs to suit your aesthetic tastes. All you need are accurate measurements, concrete forms, rebars and steel mesh, and then you’re good to go.

Just prepare the mold for the concrete and you’re all set to start pouring and curing. Of course, it helps to have precise measurements of the perimeter of your property.

What makes concrete a better material for fence construction is its ability to take any contour, large or small, tall or short, thick or thin, with the proper mold and some extra materials to reinforce the structure, such as steel. Prior to setting up the forms, remember to take exact measurements of your lot’s perimeter and determine how high you want the fence to stand.

Speaking of aesthetics, concrete fences may be made to look like other materials like wood or brick, or painted with a variety of colors to bestow your home’s frontage with beauty that lasts. Treat yourself further by repeating the exterior design of the fence on the interior to give your yard an artistic boost.

Concrete fences may also be dressed up with different patterns that cater to even the most discerning preferences. The advent of paint mixed especially for concrete provides another option for beautifying an otherwise drab fence. Match the design elements and colors of the fence to those of your house.

Instead of building the fence from the ground up, however, you may want to opt for prefabricated concrete fences. With the most of the dirty work done off site, in a facility where temperature is regulated to allow proper casting and curing of concrete panels, the only thing left to do is install them.

Later, when the concrete has properly set, the panels may be transported to the site and attached to similarly precast concrete posts.

The cost of labor for the installation on top of the amount you spend on purchasing the precast concrete panels can be daunting, but it is more cost-effective than setting up fences made of other materials in the long terms since maintenance won’t be much of a problem.

C) For moderate cracks (up to 1/2″), repeat above steps, but use sealant or pre-mixed mortar.

D) For larger cracks:
1) Chip and clean out crack area, then clean the surfaces.
2) Apply concrete adhesive, then fill with pre-mixed concrete, following manufacturer’s mixing instructions.
3) After one hour, trowel away excess material.
4) Keep it moist and covered for several days.
5) After it’s dry, coat the patch with sealant.

Over 90% of basement wall concrete cracks pose no structural threat- but what about water seepage? Where there are cracks, moisture will always follow, either now or later. So how the problem should be dealt with?

Some manufacturers of prefabricated concrete fences offer to install tubing in the panels through which electrical wires for lights and other fixtures can pass. If you plan ahead, there may be no need to have more work done just to install lamps and other devices which require electricity.

If you are planning to install lighting or other gadgets on the concrete wall, you might as well ask the manufacturer to modify the panels to accommodate electrical conduits and other accessories. By doing this, you lessen the risk of the concrete fences chipping or breaking when you try setting up an electrical system to run through it

Most homes that have a garage or basement do have concrete floors. Concrete can be readily painted as compared to other high-end treatments. You paint your concrete floors not only for aesthetic purposes but also for practical reasons as it makes the floor easier to clean and more durable in the long run. When the painting is done the correct way it will last for years.

Where to Start:

This is not a very expensive home remodeling project but it is one that is more than an overnight project. First thing you have to do is to ensure that your floor is completely dry before starting on your painting project. If you notice wet spots, especially from the basement, it is better to consult a professional first to fix that seepage problem.

Once you are completely certain that your floor is already dry, next step is to scrub it in order to free it from chemical residues and greases. This is expected from floors in your garage or shop area. This is critical because the paint would not be able to cling completely if there are any foreign materials present.

Eliminating that grease off the floor is essential and some kitty litter would be very useful in cleaning some of it. Next, scrub the floor using Goof Off and then rinse thoroughly. After wards, scrub the floor with the use of some TSP mixture; rinse and repeat several times until the mop looks clean after rinsing. Allow about three days for the floor to dry completely before the floor would be considered ready for painting.

Additional prepping necessary prior to painting:

Use a sander or some 80-grit paper to smooth the floor, remove any bumpy portion or materials that are stuck on the floor’s surface. Remove any sanding residue that the vacuum misses with the use of a tack clothe.

Now it is time to fix any cracks that might be present. To fix these little holes or cracks you can use a Cement Fix-all and be sure to let it dry thoroughly.

Now you are finally ready to start painting!

First you will need two applications of a stain blocker and primer like Kilz. These applications must dry completely in between applications. Now you can apply a top quality latex flat paint. You may need a paint compressor or a roller to make a really fine painting job.

Accessorizing your painted floor:

As a matter of personal preference you may want to make some geometric shapes or use faux stone or whatever you would like. You can express your creativity at this point, just making sure the floor is allowed to dry thoroughly before finishing.

Finishing your painted concrete floor:

To finish your newly-painted floor, apply two coatings of Breakthrough sealer with the use of a quarter-inch nap roller. Take precautions by wearing a respirator mask as fumes are expected when doing this. Allow the floor to thoroughly dry for one final time.

Now you have already finished your new floor. You may decorate it with some throw rugs or an area rug for some flourish as it is still concrete after all. However, it is now beautiful concrete!

Planning to put up a fence around your home yard? The first thing that comes to mind, no doubt, is a white picket fence. While a wooden fence may serve the purpose of making your home attractive, it pales in comparison to concrete fences, which are more durable and provides an air of security that fences made of other materials can’t match.

How about solid yet flexible concrete fences?

But wouldn’t a concrete fence make a home unsightly? Contrary to popular belief, concrete can be molded into almost any shape and size, and embellished with myriad designs to suit your aesthetic tastes. With the most of the dirty work done off site, in a facility where temperature is regulated to allow proper casting and curing of concrete panels, the only thing left to do is install them.

Cracks in a sidewalk or floor are a different issue. While they can merely be the result of material shrinkage during the curing process, they can also result from expansion, contraction and other forces. In this case, superficial patching or filling is not the answer, as it will only serve to hide the problem.

Use one of the following procedures:

A) For hairline cracks: fill with concrete sealer.

B) For cracks up to 1/4″:
1) While wearing goggles, use a cold chisel to remove broken material.
2) Clean out the surfaces.
3) Fill with caulk-type sealant or hydraulic cement.
4) Smooth overflow with putty knife or scraper.
5) Repeat, if needed to ensure that crack is completely filled.

Although buying prefabricated concrete panels and having them installed may require deep pockets, you might end up saving more because they do not rot or rust, and rarely needs replacing unlike fences composed of wood or metal. Concrete is also resistant to extreme temperatures, making it ideal in any conditions.

What is perhaps the most endearing trait of concrete fences is that it can be fitted with fixtures like lighting and insulated tubes for electrical wires during the casting stage. This feature is extremely helpful if you want lights to run along the length of the fence or simply install security cameras at selected locations.

Industry experts recommend that instead of using fillers or cosmetic fixes, the best solution involves urethane injection. Material is injected through the wall to fill in the voids behind it, thus preventing present and future leaks. Kits are available in a variety of sizes and applications, depending in the severity of the cracks.

That being said, cracks still have to be dealt with, and one very effective solution involves filling them with epoxy grout, then countersinking carbon fiber staples across the crack, thus stabilizing both wall sections. Kits are available for this type of repair

Concrete is an extraordinary material that is practical, expressive, and aesthetic all at once. From a primal and formless slurry, you can transform it into virtually any shape that becomes a solid mass. The possibilities for creative expression are endless. You can grind, polish, stamp, or stain it. You can embed meaningful objects within it.  Concrete has substance and mass, permanence and warmth. It feels earthy, and is at home in both traditional and modern settings. It assumes forms that irrevocably touch our daily lives-bridges, highways, floors, walls… even countertops. Concrete is also surprisingly tactile. Cast and shaped, it can f eel like stone rounded by the sea. Textured and colored, it can echo the patina of timeworn tile.  It first occurred to me to make a countertop out of concrete in 1985, when a friend and I were hired to design and renovate a professor’s house in the Berkeley Hills. He gave us a modest budget and announced, “This is all I can afford to spend; do whatever you want.” Armed with this rare creative license (and plenty of youthful exuberance) we aimed to be as innovative as possible.

This invitation to imagine, play, and explore inevitably led me to experiment in my own kitchen, where concrete and I began what is now our nearly two-decade dance. My first countertop was a single piece containing 11 cubic feet of concrete. It weighed nearly 1500 pounds and took 10 people-and 2 engine hoists-to turn it over once it had cured. We barely managed it, but the piece came out beautifully and is still being put to good use today.Because of its adaptability, concrete finds itself welcome in all areas of the home, especially in the kitchen and bath, but also in fireplaces, patios, garden paths, or water features. Concrete can also be used as a floor material with enormous creative advantages whether seeded, stained, stamped, broomed or diamond-finished. It can be a sole performer or play the supporting role to tile, mosaics, decorative aggregates, stone, wood, or metal. It is inexpensive, durable, noncombustible, impervious to decay, and also very effective for passive solar gain in the right application.

Shotcrete has been widely used for tunneling works and slope protection, it is also used for architectural purposes. There are two types of shotcrete application, the wet and dry process. Shotcrete is a concrete transported by means of air under pressure with high velocity. It is applied and compacted in the same time against a surface.

Shotcrete components

As mentioned earlier, shotcrete differ from normal concrete by the way to apply it. Here below some points that should be observed and respected when producing shotcrete mixes.

On the other hand, anti-washout underwater concrete is quite different in concept from the methods mentioned above; the development in this case was improved performance of the fresh concrete. That is, the viscosity of the concrete was increased and its resistance to segregation under the washing action of water was enhanced by mixing an anti-washout admixture with the concrete. The effect of this is not only to greatly improve the reliability of Concrete placed underwater, but it also has remarkable effects on environmental preservation in the construction area. In addition, the earlier tremie and concrete pump placing methods can be adopted for construction.

The sun is the most powerful force which cracks slabs. In the daytime, the sun warms throughout the day causing the slab to expand. At night, the night comes and the slab contracts. This movement happens twice daily. It is the sun/night cycle.

Additionally, it is not so much the physical movement of any cycle but it is the frequency of the cycle that causes these cracks. For example, there are probably 40 to 70 freeze/thaw cycles per year. However, the sun/night cycle happens twice a day or 728 times per year. It is this great frequency of the sun/night cycle that causes concrete to crack. Even though the freeze/thaw cycle may move the concrete more physically, it is the frequency of the sun/night cycle that causes all of the problems.

Sand / Aggregate ratio

This ratio must satisfy a few conditions. The S/A ratio must allow easy shotcrete pumping or rotor filling. As a rule it is clear that mixes containing fines in excess would cause dust, increase the water demand. A contrary, mixes containing aggregates in excess would increase rebound. It has been observed that good pumping properties are achieved when the particles smaller than 1.18 mm represent around 40% of the sand / aggregate combination.

In particular, when producing the underwater anti-wash concrete it is necessary to mix it for longer than ordinary concrete in a mixer large enough to uniformly disperse the anti-washout admixture. Also, when using concrete pumps for placement, it is necessary to design a pumping plan with care as regards pumping equipment, pumping distance, etc., because the pumping resistance is increased by the higher viscosity

Decorative Concrete

Decorative concrete is one of those phrases that when you hear, it takes some time to absorb and understand it. First of all, you might be thinking, there’s nothing decorative about a concrete that you’re aware of. Most people visualize a slab of gray stone when they hear the word concrete.

It’s obvious that some form of concrete repair is in order. The first thought might be to call up a contractor, but is that really necessary?

Before making that financial commitment, there are several things the homeowner can do to save time and money.

First, consider the cause of the problem. Most concrete damage is caused by either frost heave, vegetation growing through cracks, ground movement, soil pressure or shrinkage, poor construction or general wear and tear.

Then assess the type and amount of damage.

Suppose there is a crater developing in the sidewalk or driveway.

1) Wearing goggles use a mallet and chisel to chip away loose and broken pieces of concrete to depth of 1″.
2) Using the chisel, roughen up the surface.
3) Undercut the edges of the damaged surface (which will hold the patch in place).
4) Use wire brush or broom to clean surface.
5) Thoroughly rinse surface. If there is oil, use a suitable degreaser to remove all traces. Then rinse surface again.
6) Following manufacturer instructions, install patching compound.
7) Allow patch to cure for several days.

Cracks in a sidewalk or floor are a different issue. While they can merely be the result of material shrinkage during the curing process, they can also result from expansion, contraction and other forces. In this case, superficial patching or filling is not the answer, as it will only serve to hide the problem.

2) Clean out the surfaces.
3) Fill with caulk-type sealant or hydraulic cement.
4) Smooth overflow with putty knife or scraper.
5) Repeat, if needed to ensure that crack is completely filled.

I was a bit apprehensive at first to try something new and different, but my friend was really into it so I decided to give it a try. We worked together for our decorative concrete project and after a few days of working, it turned out to be one of the most satisfying projects I had done to improve my home. I absolutely loved the result, and the best part is that more and more people are beginning to appreciate the beauty and art put into decorative concrete and my other friends are beginning to do it themselves too.

Do you want to improve the look of your home exterior?  Instead of letting professionals do it for you, why not do it yourself.  It is less expensive and you only need three things: brush, garden hoses and power washer.  To improve the appearance of your patio, sidewalk or driveway and protect it from weathering, here are 5 simple ways to do it. And if you live in denver and need some concrete work done, check out denverconcrete.net for denver concrete services.

First step is to rent a portable power washer.  You can rent it from your local tool rental center or home improvement center.  It comes in either electric or gasoline-powered design that uses a garden hose as water source.  It delivers a stream of pressurized water that can clean your concrete.

Second step is to wet and clear your concrete of dirt and debris.  And then apply some cleaning product of your own choice.  Follow the directions found on these chemical products.  Chemical products are use to strip off grease, oil and dirt.Other products can also bleach and brighten your concrete. And also ask professional contractors on what cleaning and maintenance product to apply that goes well with your concrete.

If you have very nasty stains that you can’t remove, you can follow these easy steps. First is to spread a thick layer of sawdust or kitty litter over the grease or oil, respectively.  Sawdust and kitty litter can absorb the grease or oil from your concrete.  Allow it to sit for a day or two and gently sweep it away.  Then, pour dry cement over the dried grease spot and allow it to sit for a day or two.  Then again, gently sweep the cement and throw it away.

For rust stains, you can use oxalic acid.  ZUD cleaning products contains oxalic acid, trying this would be the mildest approach. Wet the rusty area and sprinkle it with ZUD.  After that, spray the area until the powder is wet.  Let it sit for a few minutes and brush it.

You can repeat the procedure until the rust stain is removed.

Third step is to use a long handled scrub brush on the concrete.  This is to maximize the cleaning potential of your cleaning products.  Fourth step is to rinse the concrete thoroughly using a power washer.  Power washer is the most effective way to get your concrete clean.  You should make sure that all chemical solutions and loose debris are removed from the concrete.  Most power-washer is simple to use and straightforward.Five, let the concrete dry.

Concrete usually gets dirty over time.. To maintain your concrete you should keep it clean and sealed regularly. You should try to clean it once in a year even if you don’t realize that it is already dirty.  You may also want to seal your concrete to prevent any damage to your concrete.  How often you clean and reseal your concrete depends on the conditions of the concrete.  If the concrete is expose to too much to sunlight and vehicle traffic, then the concrete should be clean and sealed frequently.

Masonry is the term normally used for buildings made out of mortar from stones, bricks and even glass. You can choose the type of materials that the structure will be comprised of to fit your specific needs or desires. When dealing with masonry, the stability and appearance of the structure that has been built is really in the hands of the people who have created it. If you don't have a good, experienced masonry crew to piece it together, it may not hold up to the weather, or time. And there is no guarantee that it will be pleasing to look at.  Check out this Masonry Colorado site for some examples of what a pro can do.

When you have a building constructed of brick, or another type of stone, there are added benefits to that particular structure. For one thing, the structure will have better insulation, resulting in a warmer interior in the winter, and cooler interior in the summer. By not having to paint the brick or stones the yearly maitenance is so much easier. Also, the look of stone suggests a strong foundation, and stability. Also, the stones and bricks will be fire resistant, and is a very strong defense against things that may get thrown into the structure. Things like debris from hurricanes or tornadoes.  Masonry Division IV is a well known company in Johnstown Colorado that provides expert Masonry Services.

There is another, and sometimes slightly more expensive alternative to brick walls, and that is veneer masonry. The veneer is placed over existing brick or stone structures like a facade. This type of masonry is typically used strictly for aesthetic purposes, as it really does nothing for strength or permanence. Veneer masonry is primarily a beautification process. When you use this technique, you will need to be sure to have proper insulation in the wall, and since there is an air gap between the bricks or stones and the wall itself, moisture can accumulate in the gaps. That is the reason for the weep holes and the base of the wall. So if there is an excessive amount of moisture that has accumulated in the gap, it can drain out, and should cause no further problems.

Whichever form of masonry you choose, the full brick, or the veneer masonry, be sure you have a good high quality construction crew, with a reputation of performing at the utmost of standards. Remember, the look and stability of your structure really depends on the work crew you have hired. Look for workers with more experience doing the type of masonry you are looking for. This will help you in finding the right workers, and not costing you more money in the long run. you need a good crew to start because if the first crew messes it all up you will have to pay a second to fix it.
