Transform Your Bedroom in Just 5 Steps
People spend about one third of their lives in their bedroom. It is a room where you can reflect your personal style in the colors, fabrics, furnishings and atmosphere. Follow these steps to create your dream bedroom.
Step 1: Remove clutter – Re-decorating (and even cleaning) a cluttered room is more difficult than necessary. Put anything you don’t want in your bedroom into a box to be moved later. Put away the stuff that belongs (clothes, jewelry, etc.). Shoe storage and seasonal clothing storage. are good investments to help with this. Remember, a place for everything and everything in its place. Decide where to put each item.
Step 2: Furniture repair – When you look at your bedroom furniture, how does it look? If it is not in good repair, this is a good time to repair it. Check your favorite hardware store for furniture touch-up markers. No one has time in the morning to struggle with drawers that won’t slide so replace or repair them. Change the furniture placing if you can. Be creative but keep functionality in mind. Try to keep an overall balanced look. The center of a bedroom is generally the bed.
Step 3: Bedding – I recommend that you choose your bedding BEFORE choosing paint. Paint is available in all colors imaginable. Reduce hassle and save time. Select the paint based on the bedding!
It is wise to choose TWO new bedding sets. Bed in a bag sets are a non-decorator’s dream because they contain matching items. Commonly bedding sets contain matching sheets and pillow cases, a bed cover and pillow shams. Seasonal changes are easy if you have two (or more) bedding sets.
Duvets and comforters have similarities but are different. They are similar. They keep you warm while sleeping. Duvets are usually white or off-white and should be used with a duvet cover. Duvet covers are big bags, sort of like pillow cases. The duvet slides inside for protection. Duvets wear out more quickly when laundered frequently. Duvet covers are. Just slip the cover off for laundering so you don’t have to wash the whole duvet (filling and all) each time. It is necessary to clean your duvet every 3-5 years.
Comforters are not just white. They are covered with the “showy” fabric on the outside and don’t need a cover. Standard home washing machines don’t accommodate bulky comforters well. Dry cleaning a comforter gets costly. Comforters can be used inside a duvet cover just like duvets.
Careful selection of sizes is necessary. Internet stores offer much greater selection of fabrics, sizes, and colors. Measure before ordering. Don’t forget to measure the depth (thickness) of your mattress as well as the length and width. Fitted sheets and mattress pads must be the right depth for your mattress. Measure from the top of the box spring to the floor for the “drop” of a bed skirt.
Step 4: Choosing Paint – For an inexpensive yet effective room transformation, be sure to paint the walls (and possibly the ceiling).
Paint selection is easier if you have both bedding sets with you. Seek assistance. Select a color that will work with both sets. Choose a color in the bedding to match the paint with. In fact, it’s better if it doesn’t. Just find one that will compliment or contrast the colors nicely. Don’t be afraid to paint the ceiling a shade or two lighter.
Step 5: Complete the Look – After the paint is dry, hang pictures, paintings, and wall decoration if you desire. Apply window coverings, etc. and make your bed with the new bedding.
5 easy steps to a transformed bedroom: Remove clutter, repair and replace furniture, buy some new bedding, paint the walls, and add some finishing touches. You have the bedroom of your dreams.
